Saint-Nazaire Cathedral and the Old Bridge
A massive fortified silhouette visible from the plain, Saint-Nazaire Cathedral dominates the city. From its forecourt, the panorama takes in the Orb, the Old Bridge and the vineyard slopes. Crossing the old bridge at sunset and climbing back up through the lanes to the top makes an inexpensive romantic walk. For a first date, it is hard to find anywhere more photogenic.
The Paul-Riquet Avenues
A long promenade lined with century-old plane trees and cafés, the Paul-Riquet Avenues are the beating heart of Béziers. You pass the statue of Pierre-Paul Riquet, builder of the Canal du Midi and a local son. The simple idea of a drink on a terrace is always a good one, on flower-market days as well as evenings before a game at the nearby stadium.
Plateau des Poètes and halls
At the far end of the avenues, the Plateau des Poètes offers an English-style landscaped garden, with poets’ busts and a statue-crowned pond. Right next door, the covered halls invite you to sample olive oil, tielles and the wines of the slopes. On Lyad, Béziers members share their favourite tables and walks; it is up to you to find someone to stretch out the evening with.
